Ahoy there, July! It’s officially summer, friends—the vibes are strong, the sunscreen is flowing,
and the smell of charcoal on the grill is downright glorious.

If you’re looking for a local summer escape that checks all the boxes—historic charm, ocean
views, great eats—let me gently (but firmly) nudge you toward Newport, Rhode Island. I’ve
loved this town ever since my teenage days on First Beach, daydreaming about boats I definitely
couldn’t afford (still can’t, but hey—we get creative).

These days, Barbara (that’s my endlessly patient, endlessly wonderful wife) and I like to cruise
up to Newport from Mount Hope Bay on our boat, Shrimp on the Barbie. We’ll stroll around the
harbor, wander through the shops, or just find a bench to people-watch and snack on clam cakes.
Newport is one of those places that just hits the reset button on your soul.

If you’re into seafood, I’d recommend Bowen’s Wharf— you’ll leave happy. The atmosphere is
casual but special, and even if you’re just grabbing chowder and watching the boats roll in, it
feels like a scene from a summer postcard. If you’re up for a splurge, Barbara recommends the 3-
pound lobster dinner—it’s definitely Instagram-worthy (and nap-inducing).

If you’re staying the night—and trust me, you’ll want to— try to catch a show or concert at the
Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center. Last fall, we had the surreal joy of premiering the
first episode of our Boatbuilders docuseries there. Sharing that night with so many friends,
family, and salty souls from the community was something I’ll never forget. If you came out to
support us—thank you. Seriously. I owe you a bag of popcorn and a hug.

This summer, when I’m not out on Shrimp on the Barbie chasing sunsets and dodging seagulls,
I’m deep in the creative trenches—writing, dreaming, and tracking down funding for Episode 2
of The Boatbuilders. It’s shaping up to be something special, and I’d love to tell you more about
it. Interested in hearing more about what’s next? Let’s grab a coffee. Or better yet, let’s hop
aboard Shrimp on the Barbie and talk shop over salt air and sea breeze! Please email me anytime
at [email protected].

Until then, here’s to Newport nights, lobster feasts, and good stories told well.
Catch you on the dock,
Gregg
